From the previous game, Kratos was angry and resentful towards the Greek pantheon for how they treated and manipulated him. His rage fueled his power. It became his ultimate power, leading him to defeat and kill almost all the gods in his homeland.

Kratos left Greece and found himself in Midgard. When he met his future wife Faye or Laufey, they fell in love and had a son, Atreus. Over the years, Kratos had learned to control his anger and not let his anger control him. 

During his travels with his son, Atreus, he hides his emotion, specifically his anger, from his son as he does not want his son to view him as a monster. Due to this, Kratos is constantly holding back his true power, which is connected to his anger. Throughout the game, Kratos moves feels faster and stronger with every attack after he is told to Atreus the truth or part of it.
