Yari Ashigaru are the most basic units availble to players. With a recruitment cost of 250, it is one of the cheapest units in the game. They can be recruited at the lowest settlement level and only need one turn to recruit, making them very accessible to new players. All starting armies have a couple of Yari Ashigaru units on them as well.

All clans are able to recruit the Yari Ashigaru. Some clan bonuses have an effect on the units, like the cheaper and stronger Yari Ashigaru of the Oda Clan. The Oda Clan also have a stronger version of the Yari Ashigaru called the Oda Long Yari Ashigaru. The units are two separate units and can be recruited at the same time.

Yari Ashigaru are one of the weakest units in head-to-head combat. They falter easily against arrow-fire and get decimated by Katana Samurai. Given their weak defenses, they're more suited to hit-and-run and flanking attacks. The basic formation would be to have the Katana Samurai tank the enemy's main army while the Yari Ashigaru go around and charge them from the back. Enemy units are more likely to have lower morale and even break when being flanked.

When fighting head-on Yari Ashigaru can win against most infrantry provided that they outnumber them 2:1. As the unit gain more expereince they soon become able to fight evenly against most infantry units.

This is due to their unique ability called yari wall, where the unit tightens in formation and stays in place. While this formation is weak against arrow-fire and flanks, it becomes deadly when dealing with head on charges. When two units in yari wall formation are layered on top of each other, the units become a wall that can hold against an enemy's main army while cavalry and other units go in for the flank.
